I Froze in 9 Euro Cities. These 5 Are Worth December

Activities2 min readBy Alex Reed

Most European cities are miserable in December. I've spent three Decembers bouncing around the continent, and I'll be straight with you: half the places everyone recommends are cold, dark by 4pm, and filled with overpriced Christmas markets selling the same reheated wine.

But five cities actually deliver. Here's what works, what doesn't, and the real costs.

1. Vienna, Austria — The Only Christmas Market Worth the Hype

Why it works: Vienna does December right because it's built for winter. The Christmas markets here aren't tourist traps—locals actually go to them. The Christkindlmarkt at Rathausplatz is the best place in Europe in December for atmosphere without the crushing crowds of German markets.

I spent €89/day here including a decent hotel, and that's mid-range.

What you'll actually do:

  • Rathausplatz Christmas Market: Free entry, €4-6 for glühwein, €8-12 for food stands
  • Schönbrunn Palace market: Less crowded, better quality crafts
  • Kunsthistorisches Museum: €21 entry, empty in December
  • Café Central for sachertorte: €8.50 (tourist tax, but worth it once)

Transport: Vienna public transit is €8 for a 24-hour pass. You'll use it—Best Place In Europe In December spreads out.

💡 Pro tip: Skip Stephansplatz market completely. It's shoulder-to-shoulder tourists and €8 bratwurst. The Spittelberg market in the 7th district is where locals go—better food, half the crowd.

Category Cost Reality Check
Mid-range hotel €65-85/night Book Mariahilf district, not old town
Daily food €30-40 Mix markets with supermarkets
Transport €8/day 24hr pass covers everything
Museum entry €15-25 Skip combo tickets, pick 1-2

Time needed: 3-4 days. The best cities to see in France has domestic guides.

Bottom line: The best place in Europe in December is Vienna for Christmas market atmosphere, Seville for actual warmth, or Edinburgh if you're there for Hogmanay. Everything else is either too cold, too expensive, or too disappointing. Pick your priority, book early, pack warm, and keep expectations realistic.

December Europe isn't magic—but if you choose the right city, it can still be great.
